Yesterday, a cyber attack reportedly caused a global outage of some of Microsoft’s 365 services.
The service disruption lasted for around 10 hours and affected a variety of Microsoft services including Microsoft 365, which includes Outlook, Teams, OneDrive etc as well as other services such as Azure.
This was initiated by a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. A DDoS attack is a cyberattack designed to cause disruption to a website or online service by overwhelming it with traffic. This overload of requests typically causes the site to crash or become extremely slow, disrupting normal operations and affecting legitimate users from being able to access the service.
Microsoft claims to have implemented a fix to the problem and states that they will monitor the situation to ‘ensure full recovery.’
This incident comes within 2 weeks of the last major outage of Microsoft services caused by a flawed software update from Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.
This incident continues to highlight the requirement to protect your critical infrastructure and have a robust disaster recovery plan to ensure a swift recovery in the event of an incident.
